Manti Te’o In the span of six hours in September 2012, Notre Dame football star, Manti Te’o, learned of the death of his grandmother and girlfriend. Only problem was his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, never existed. Te’o had been in an online relationship with someone he thought was Kekua, but it was a hoax perpetuated by a family friend posing as Kekua, he had been catfished all along. The Internet had a field day, with "Te’Oing" becoming a poplar meme across social media. 4. Twerking Fail In 2013, an extremely popular video titled "Worst Twerk Fail EVER – Girl Catches on Fire" went viral with over 9 million views on YouTube in less than a week. Multiple news outlets covered the story, expressing concern for the young woman whose dance had gone spectacularly awry. Even Jimmy Kimmel had her on his late night program for an interview where it was revealed that it was a prank all along staged by Kimmel. 3. Apple Wave In 2014, users on the online message board 4chan made an official looking announcement advertising the new "Wave" technology from Apple. It promoted the use of a household microwave to recharge an iPhone battery once the user downloaded iOS 8. Of course this is a very bad idea, but that didn’t stop some gullible people from destroying their iPhone... :) 2. Tourist Guy One of the more famous Internet hoaxes involved one of the more infamous days in American history. A few days after the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers, a picture surfaced on the Internet of a man posing for a photo on the observation deck seemingly right before one of the planes was to crash into the building. The picture was all over the news and sent through email countless times. It was soon found out to be a hoax as there were many inconsistencies with the photo. 1. Jasmine Tridevil In 2014 the web was set ablaze by 21 year old Jasmine Tridevil, who claimed she had successful cosmetic surgery to add a third breast. Tridevil and her third breast became a media sensation; her story appeared all over television news and throughout the vast reaches of the Internet. Holes in her story were quickly revealed and with nothing to corroborate her story, she quickly faded into obscurity. Her third breast turned out to be a removable prosthetic all along.
