A Dalmatian pelican born last month is now healthy and growing strong after being nursed back to health at the San Diego Zoo,. The young bird weighs approximately 12 pounds, Reuters reports. "He started off a little bit slow and didn't have really good weight gains for the first ten days or couple of weeks, but since then, he's really picked up, he's doing very well, we have to monitor how much he eats so that he won't grow too quickly," a senior bird keeper at San Diego Zoo said. The pelican is one of two chicks being hand-reared at the zoo to ensure its well-being. Animal care staff at the Zoo's Avian Propagation Center off-exhibit will hand-raise the birds for approximately 60 days until they are in good shape and strong enough to return to their flock at the Zoo's Safari Park in California. Dalmatian pelicans are part of the first North American breeding program for the endangered species and have hatched 34 birds since 2006. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
