Dubai, Expose of blatant disregard for hygiene practices in the hotel industry

As a physician and pathologist, I have a pretty strong stomach. But even I was overcome with a wave of nausea when I watched a hidden camera expose of hotel hygiene practices by investigative reporters. In brief, for the report I saw, teams of journalists placed hidden cameras in hotel rooms in a range of randomly-chosen hotels in the Atlanta, Georgia area (the study, and similar observations, have also been carried out in other locations). Hotels ranged from the mid-priced business hotels to the top of the line luxury establishments (5 star). A blatant disregard for hygienic practices that could lead to serious infection was observed in numerous hotels when housekeeping staff cleaned (or didn't clean, as the case may be) the drinking glasses in the hotel room. Housekeeping staff was caught on film either rinsing the drinking glasses (in preparation for a new guest) with water only, or washing them with industrial cleaner labeled "do not drink." In other cases, dirty bath towels - from the previous guest - were used to dry the glasses after their perfunctory rinse in tap water. Another film clip showed a woman wearing latex gloves cleaning the guest toilet and then proceeding to rinse the drinking glasses, without removing or changing the gloves. We all know that some of the principal routes for spread of infections include contact with infected persons or contact with articles of bedding or clothing that have been contaminated by an infected source. Numerous infections are spread by respiratory secretions, like those that may contaminate a drinking glass. Other serious diseases are spread by the fecal-oral route, in which contaminated fecal matter (think about the toilet-cleaning gloves or drying the glasses with bath towels) comes in contact with something (for example, a glass) that enters the mouth. While not all viruses and bacteria are hardy enough to live for extended periods of time on contaminated surfaces such as glass, many of them - including those that can cause serious or even deadly infections - are. A limited list of common infections that could be spread by these incorrect hygiene practices includes: Cold viruses (common cold) Influenza (flu) Rotavirus Norovirus Diphtheria E. coli Hepatitis A Staphylococcus (staph infection) Streptococcus (for example, skin infections, sore throat, strep throat, cellulitis, impetigo, scarlet fever) Hemophilus influenzae (H. flu, Hib) It's important to keep in mind that this is a limited list of infections that might reasonably be found in the U.S. population. Consider the infections that may be brought in by foreign, including third-world travelers, and the scenario is even scarier; and we haven't even mentioned bedbugs!

As disgusting as it may seem people don't consider the housekeeper she has 25 to 30 minutes to clean that room the guest has thrown all their clothes and stuff all over and this staff has to pick them up arrange and fold the clothes then the hotel does not provide glasses for replacing so she has no choice coz she has to please the guest with a 'shiny' glass coz thats wat they need if she doesn't dry it thats one hell of a complain from the guest and the rags provided are few and of bad quality she has like 14 rooms to clean with the same rags she is not a magician. So don't blame the housekeeper blame the hotel management for not providing replacements and for overworking the staff.

NEVER use the items in your hotel room. Ask for new items from room service.
-
It's either the housekeeper, or the Management that needs to be reprimanded by the Health and Safety Code. Someone need to make that move.

For those who stay in hotels all the time -something you have to watch as it could save your life.

I ask the hotel to please let me use a cleanser and I always disinfect my rooms. I have a daughter and her hands are all over the place. I can't risk it these days...

My first job had been a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn Express where my mom was the manager.
We used disposable everything and changed all the comforters instead of waiting for stains, though that's not what most hotels do. We used separate rags for everything and each was color-coded. We all had our rooms checked daily by management and corrected on anything wrong, even the slightest bit of dust. I'd be weary of any hotel that's not the one I worked at though. I realized how lazy people can be when working there, but luckily my mom either whipped them into shape quickly or fired them. -
Being in the hotel industry, I do think such practices are unacceptable. The sad fact is, this is a labour intensive, underpaid and unappreciated job. On top of that,we have to deal with unreasonable guests..

And yet, most of us manage to limp into old age. As gross as this is, we have immune systems for a reason.
If you REALLY want to gross out, take a black light into a hotel room. -
I work in foodservice. I just discovered that several guys from another department use their shoes/feet to flush the urinals which our kitchen workers frequent. There are sometimes puddles of urine around the urinals so you can imagine what awaits the next man that goes to flush. I have confronted them and gone to management. I hope management does something or I will. Then I'll likely get fired. These guys are nasty fuckers.

The maid in this video should be fired and deported back to Mexico or whatever South American nation she was able to find space on a banana boat.

standard practice no matter what any hotel says.
ever see a hotel housekeeper with a tray of glasses on her cart? nope.
did you also know they don't change the comforters on your bed unless there are OBVIOUS stains!
that should be the first thing you throw into a corner before you touch the bed. -
all those 'maids' were ILLEGALS,,,just sayin. can't read, write or speak english so how do you expect them to understand health code violations?
-
I almost threw up f*ck using glasses or anything from a hotel ever again

I am a housekeeper , ,I have been for many years and OMG I am shocked, one all glasses, cups are to be changed daily, coffee cups should be changed and also be taken to be washed in a dish washer, you don't wipe out glasses with windex, what I'm watching is laziness, By health code, new glasses are to be put into a room and the dirty ones to be taken out, people carry germs, the windex does nothing, also the bathrooms should be washed down with eco lab pink cleaner to kill germs, if I was her boss and caught her cleaning this way she would be fired on the spot. this is totally wrong, I also was a housekeeper supervisor and there is no way by health codes, this is allowed

I'm glad that every place I've stayed recently uses the disposable plastic ones (and I often have my own lovely glass ones when traveling, especially if locally for SCA events)
