The tower of the Lakhta Centre in St. Petersburg will presumably be Europe's highest building due to its 462 m in total height. The sensitive and demanding geological conditions of St. Petersburg and the results of the complex skyscraper design analysis required 260 cast-in-situ bored piles down to a depth of 82 m, which is one of Europe's deepest large diameter pile foundation. The works have been carried out by OOO BAUER Technologie, the Russian subsidiary of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH. To work within the clients challenging time schedule and to fulfill the clients demand on quality a new piling technology applying expandable drilling tools was developed by Bauer. This piling technology provides new design and construction possibilities for deep foundations and may help to optimize large diameter pile foundations due to their economic and technical aspects.
