The Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building standing at a whopping 828 meters. It is 2.5 times the size of the Eiffel Tower and it has the world's longest elevator. So how can we build such a high building without it topping over? Those clever engineers came up with an amazing design, its buttress core has three wings which act like an axel preventing the building from twisting and turning. The building didn't come cheap and it reportedly cost 1.5 billion US dollars to construct. It's not surprising they ran out of money when building it! But not to worry UAE President himself Mr Khalifa bailed them out on the condition that they name the building after him! The world's tallest building has some amazing stats: It is 828 meters tall and has 163 floors There are 57 lifts/elevators The lifts/elevators move at 10 meters a second At peak times 36 megawatts of electricity is used 1 million liters of water are needed to run the building EVERY DAY! Our very own James May contemplated how we could build an elevator to take us in to space: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=annVRxRjj4c&list=PLMrtJn-MOYmfqNgyPxx6NYMZnd25y4shc&index=15 Or if you like the idea of star gazing at the top observation deck check out Jheni's video on the Northern Lights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS0gssL7wJE&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLMrtJn-MOYme6klSjJXoZfWmNZ6ZthOSA If you enjoyed finding out how to build a skyscraper click here on how to build Ironman's suit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMUDcWD0beY&list=PLMrtJn-MOYme6klSjJXoZfWmNZ6ZthOSA&index=25 http://www.youtube.com/user/HeadsqueezeTV http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=HeadsqueezeTV

-
They should really build a real version of the 300 stories Shard from the game Mirror's Edge.
-
you never explained how they built the thing.
-
they ran out abit of a money so they have to call the big guy ... DAMN IT :)
-
btw the mile high tower is gonna be in jeddah saudi arabia
-
I am pretty sure they used popsicle sticks and white glue to build it.
-
only 1.5B? seriously a lot less than i'd have thought considering the cost of warships
-
If you just say "I disagree" you are just retelling what people on the internet have said. Jetfuel burn hot enogh to make that old steel 50% weaker.
-
That amount would actually be very impractical to carry around in your back pocket.
-
This doesn't explain how they built it
-
You didn't answer the question..

Aaah, so You've also noticed that 1,5 bil USD seems a bargain? Material-; tech- and cost-wise it would stand near, say, a nuclear plant? But then, how come EPR in Olkiluoto now stands at a whopping 8,5 bil EUR and there is still some work to be done.
-
vice would do that kind of thing
-
I love UAE and Dubai

As a student of Planing Architechture, I admit that this building is astonishing. But as a human being I have also to admit that it was built by poor imigrants in conditions of slavery, people that worked day in and day out, in desperation to survive, were paid as little as 4 dollars a day. Now how come we dont speak about that?

One goal to make their country shine. And really its shinning.

Well thanks for making the video. Though totally baseless. Jumping from one thing to another. This building is built by team work. And mostly an icon for human race to be proud off. From as low as a basic paid labour to the top most the king of uae. One goal make their countey
