Very pleased to see that - slowy but surely - the King's Field series is getting the praise it rightfully deserves. Even if it's too late to convince From Software to make any more. The ONLY game like it I've discovered recently is "Dungeons & Darkness" which just got released on Steam. But first person action dungeon crawlers (not turn based! not 90-degree movement) are otherwise dead. Which sucks because it's my favourite genre.
Great video. KF4 might be the best in the series. The world is beautifully crafted, the atmosphere is addictively charnel and oppressive, and the music is wonderfully enigmatic melodic and appropriate with many memorable themes. God... this game needs a sequel!! -
dude are you rolling haha

Glad I saw this last monh. Never had such a profound want to play a game I don't have. Went through all the trouble of setting up a PS2 emulator (due to Japan imports) and thus far, I've had a blast. Sure, how slow the game can feel can be a bit on the grating side at times, but I see why it's loved.

This is my favorite video from you.
You're very adorable James :) -
Happy Birthday, James! :3

Earlier this week I was getting a little annoyed, trying to remember the title of that game I used to have with the castle, and archers, and gigantic golems , and blahblahblah.
I Just happened to stumble on this. My brain feels better already. I think that may have been the first 1'st person game I ever actually finished.
This is the second one, right?
It looks a bit better than I remember it looking, graphically. I had forgotten about the slow sward swing-- "Swwwarch!" lol -
love your channel. You seem like a really chill guy.

I don't get it, why did 85% of the guys die in the first 30 seconds? I don't see what killed them in the video. And why would only 20% of the women die?

For a while, I thought you were talking about Eternal Ring, and I was about to bash you for it. However, this is not the case and I remember playing this one as well as Kingsfield 1 and 2 (US versions) in my childhood. I loved this style of play. I hate having super powers or godly weapons with new games, because without limits the gameplay is boring. In Kingsfield, you did not start out well equiped at all and it was kinda hard to find items, making each find something worthy of your time. The game did have a slight horror aspect. They made the main character really weak and it strikes all the right buttons to put you not only in the mood but also in character to play. Finding an upgrade directly effects your chance, and weapons all looked different which at the time was really new. I don't think I saw an rpg where when I equipped another weapon, there were not just color variations, but the type of attack changed. I love this game and most of the other Kingsfield games. Keep doing your thing, James!

Reminds me of the "Legend of Grimrock" series -- especially that moment where you hear the sound of footsteps but can't locate the source until you realize the wall can be removed...
-
It would be awesome if they made another King's Field game, with all the things they added in the souls series, but in first person. It would be really funny!

Loved the first 2 games too.

I for one don't really mind the production values. I mean, the kind of spit and polish that EC proper has is nice, but this really gives much more of a personal feel. EC is a lesson from a teacher to a student about a topic that the teacher is more knowledgable, but this gives more of the feel of you as a person making a recommendation as an equal and a fellow game aficionado. It really fits better for the more informal subject matter.

I doubt ill get a response to this but James, I never play my copy of KF The ancient City because for whatever reason, my game is unstable, or my console is unstable when Im playing Ancient City.. the whole screen seems to "vibrate" at all times, and just wont sit still. But i noticed in your video that your game is stable, and plays smooth, SO Im wondering, are you playing a PS2 copy of the game? Rom/ISO? Are you playing On PS2? If so what kind of PS2? Or are you playing it on PC? Im wondering if I just happened to get a faulty copy of the game. PS, KF is the only First Person game I play. My personal favorite is KF2 <3

King's Field is an amazing series. I enjoy it much more than the Soul's games. I wish there was an updated King's Field game :(
-
Damn you're charming as fuck
-
I really really want this series to return... Please From ;(
-
I play the series from the ps1 original to the ancient city still to this day and I used to watch my parents play the series when I was little
-
Dark souls focuses a bit more on combat. King's field is much more about exploration while the comabt is simple poking and flanking, it actually feels like NES zelda game in that sense

I love that your bookshelf contained a copy of Cosmos and Amano's "The Sky"! I found a fantastic copy of his original artbook/graphic novel of Angel's Egg at a con a few years ago and it's one of my treasures. ^_^ Hope to see you at PAX this year!!!
