Del Tiempo [concerning time] is a musical impression on the concept of time, which employs a constantly pulsating rhythm over irregular metrical structure. The idea for Del Carrillon, sus almas y engranajes [Of the Carillon, its souls and gears] came about after my reading of García Lorca's Poema del Cante Jondo En la torre amarilla, cesa la campana. El viento con el polvo, hace proras de plata. In the yellow tower, the bell stops The wind with the dust creates prows of silver [From Poema del Cante Jondo, by Federico García Lorca] The starting measures of Del Carrillón serve also as a refrain for the entire piece. aMEriCANISMOS was written around the events of September 11, 2001 and is a musical reflection on the patriotic spirit that arose in the United States at that time. De Poleas y Contrapesos [Pulleys and Counterweights] was conceived first as a piece for viola and piano. In this movement, the percussive and static harmony somehow counterbalances and holds back the forward drive of an energetic, tireless pulsation."
