New Featurette for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 GHOST PROTOCOL Highlights Tom Cruise's Burj Khalifa Stunt Director Brad Bird looks pretty cheerful in this featurette, considering he's in charge of keeping one of the world's biggest stars alive while he leaps, climbs, and dangles off the tallest building in the world. For the fourth installment of Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise apparently must find his inner Spiderman and scale the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 2723 feet (gulp). This stunt really does look death-defyingly cool! As for Cruise, he looks pretty relaxed in those wires. The film will be in IMAX theaters Dec. 16 and everywhere on Dec. 21. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 GHOST PROTOCOL SYNOPSIS: When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the United States government initiates a black ops "ghost protocol" and disavows the entire Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt and his team are to be blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate in the dark, outside of their agency. However, Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured during their mission, they will be charged as terrorists planning to incite global nuclear war. Ethan is then forced to work with ex-IMF agent Brandt, who knows more about Hunt and his past than even Hunt himself. Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol (also known as Mission: Impossible IV) is an upcoming action film, and the fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series. It stars Tom Cruise, who reprises his role of IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, and is director Brad Bird's first live-action film. Ghost Protocol was written by Christopher McQuarrie, André Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, and produced by Cruise, J. J. Abrams (director of the third film) and Bryan Burk. Amazing

The main reason is actually because Tom Cruise produces the films himself, so in the end he gets the final say (one of the reasons he began producing them himself in the first place was so he could do his own stunts). While I agree that had they shot it using CGI it would have been cheaper and safer, it would be severely lacking in the bad-ass department. I have to give him kudos for doing the stunts in these films himself.

Why was it necessary to dangle the real Tom Cruise out of that building and not a stunt man? (First of all, they could have shot it computer-generated). It would have been cheaper and a lot safer! And secondly, why not use a stunt man? Films have to pay really high insurance premiums when they have a primary actor do his own dangerous stunt...I think the only reason they did it the way they did was to add publicity to the film...
