Though not strictly transport related, it still is a very important day, not only in British history, but in world history too. 100 years ago Remembrance Day (November 11th) and Remembrance Sunday (the closest Sunday to the 11th) were just another set of dates in the calendar. But in 1918 it was on the 11th at 11 O'clock that the guns that had echoed throughout the continent of Europe fell gradually silent as the opposing powers called a truce. In fact 100 years ago on this day, the war was still very much in its infancy, with men continuing fight and die in their thousands on the field of honour. This was particularly special to me because the 9th November would also have been the 120th Birthday of my Great-Grandfather, who 100 years ago was fighting on the Western Front and narrowly avoided death at Ypres, where after contracting Trench Fever he was forced to take a few days recuperation, with the soldier that replaced him tragically being killed by shellfire. Today, Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal Family came out to celebrate this historic event together with thousands of people that lined the streets of Westminster. Also present were thousands of ex-servicemen and women who had come to pay homage to their fallen forebears. With that said, I hope you enjoy this little glimpse at when an entire city fell silent, with the chime of Big Ben at 11am, and the shot from a distant gun in St James' Park signalling the two minutes of reflection for the lives and souls lost in 'The War to end all Wars.' In order of appearance in lavish cars of the Royal Household, we have the following: - In the 1986 Rolls Royce Phantom VI is HRH Prince William and Princess Catherine - In the 1950 Rolls Royce Phantom IV (One of only 18 ever built, and only 16 left in existance) is HRH Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne - In the 1977 Rolls Royce Phantom VI (Former State Limousine of the Royal Family) is HRH Prince Charles and Princess Camilla - In the 2002 Bentley State Limousine (One of only two presented to the Royal Household for the 2002 Golden Jubilee Celebrations), Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
