Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) took part in a House Committee on Ways and Means hearing on the status of the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) review of taxpayer targeting practices on June 26, 2013. During the hearing, Smith asked IRS Principal Deputy Commissioner Daniel Werfel, to explain what resources were used to develop and implement the programs which were used to target taxpayers for their political beliefs, and suggested these funds be used appropriately before the agency requests more money from Congress. As part of Werfel's interim report to Congress on IRS Targeting, the agency requested a $1 billion increase in operating funds for the next fiscal year.
