Robert coming out of police station shaking hands with officer STORYLINE: French climber Alain Robert, known as "Spiderman" for his skyscraper-scaling stunts, climbed one of the highest buildings in the Paris business district La Defense on Tuesday, the Elf Total Fina tower. The 190-metre (627-feet) 40 storey building is the headquarters of the giant European petroleum consortium. Robert, 39, tried to climb the tower in 1999 but failed because of bad weather. This time it took him 90 minutes using bare hands covered in rosin and special climbing shoes. Dozens of onlookers held their breath as Robert made the dangerous and at times, slippery ascent into the arms of waiting police. Robert was taken to a nearby police station but no charges were laid. A professional climber for more than 25 years, Robert began climbing skyscrapers seven years ago. His conquests include the Empire State Building in New York, the 54-storey Shinjuku Tower in Tokyo, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the world's tallest building.
