On 12 May 2008 a province in China experienced an earthquake which the tremors to be felt in Taiwan. Taipei 101 skyscraper is protected by a large pendulum or big tuned mass damper weighing nearly 800 tons, that moves to compensate for the movement of the building so as not to collapse.

One day, we will reach the stars.

the ball is not moving. the building is. the ball is just absorbing some of that energy. thanks grady from Practical engineering!

I always wondered what would happen if the cables that held that damper failed. Would the sphere have enough weight to punch through to the foundation.

0:02 Mass Dumper? yeah watch out for the big turds falling.
-
But will it blend?

Taiwan is not China

Zio ken!

"so as not to collapse"
this is incorrect, the building would never collapse, but the mass damper makes the top floors more comfortable for high level personnel. -
stunning

That's so amazing and eerie.
-
Which floor can you see it from?

This probably was moving due to wind and tall buildings more often need wind dampers. The Chinese National government went to Taiwan when the PRC 'revolution' dominated and in 1971 PRC -people's republic of China got UN recognition. Since then the PRC has been trying to get rid of Taiwan R.O.C. but the U.S. and others helped resist that or delay it, in less than "official" ways. The Nationalists are not communists, there may be a racial issue in the mix as well but it is mostly a difference in types of government that is at issue. Now a Democratic Constitutional Republic with 'unversal sufferage", private property rights verses what was supposed to be a communist revolution of the PRC but, like the old USSR there's been a lot of commercialism/capitalism creep in.

No earthquakes
just the wind -
I can just imagine all the people that said "Oh no! It's moving! It's going to break!" when movement is the reason it's there. I'd be a lot more on edge if the 90th floor started to tremble and that thing didn't move.

nice stuff...
