We spent New Year’s Eve in Dubai and of course I recorded it with more shaky video. Making our way to Dubai Mall in the morning we encounter thousands of people already swarming the area. Police and security guards had already blocked off certain areas throughout the mall herding large crowds into manageable groups. Wanting to find a good view away from the crazy crowds at the Burj Khalifa we walked along the quiet streets of the Dubai World Trade Center area as night fell. While crossing a pedestrian overpass we saw what looked like a Skyscraper on fire near the Burj. Soon the flames could be seen racing up the outside of the building. We encountered a policeman who calmly said yes it was on fire as he directed traffic like it was normal for this kind-of-thing to happen. But really what could he do or anyone do to help the situation besides stay out of the way. Not knowing what had caused the fire or how bad it was left us wondered if the fireworks show would or should take place. By this time several friends had messaged about our safety and happily we reported the good news. Of course thoughts of terrorism sprang to many people’s minds, but my first thought was a fireworks malfunction. Some of our questions were answered after a news bulletin from the local paper read the fire was contained and the fireworks would go on as planned. So, we walked to a deserted field near the Skyscrapers and watched the city skyline from afar. Soon dozens of locals joined our private party as the countdown to 2016 rapidly approached.
