A fascinating royal castle rises in Chambord forest in the Loire Valley, France. It was built beginning in 1519 by order of King Francis I to be a hunting lodge. The castle has two main parts. The lower part is rectangular, massive, made up by a central fortress and four huge bulwark towers on its corners. This part obeys the layout of typical medieval fortresses. The upper part recalls the poise of an old, noble and majestic deer. It is the most original part of the palace. It is composed by a surprising forest of towers and chimneys. What a marvelous ensemble of towers! How strong it all is! How solid! As a whole, the castle produces at the same time a sensation of harmony and delicacy. Nobility exudes from the blue roofs that harmoniously descend all the way to the stone walls. On the lower part, the stone walls clutching the ground appear to be saying: Anyone who tries to break me will be crushed; anyone who wants to pry me out of the ground will have to take the world off its hinges; for I am a tower of Chambord Castle and no one will wrench me from here. What mysterious harmony envelopes this bond between strength and delicacy, between the apparently planned, yet seemingly spontaneous layout of these towers! How beautiful it is to appreciate antithetical qualities together! Why do opposing but harmonious qualities offer such beauty when found together? Because unity in variety is one of the principles of beauty. Unity in variety is the best image of God in natural creation. It expresses one of the forms of perfection that God placed in the Universe. The human mind tends to contemplate that which is one and at the same time is varied, diverse, and dynamic. Chambord has unity in variety. On contemplating it, my soul reposes and at the same time elevates itself to God. What beauty, what elegance, what distinction, what nobility, what grandeur, what refinement! This harmony was attained only in Christian Civilization! How fecund is the most precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ! O Lord! Fifteen hundred years after Thy death, this flower is born out of the Christian civilization founded by Thy Church! This marvel would not have blossomed if Thou hadst not shed Thy blood to redeem us! Lord Jesus Christ, Thou art the fountain of all grace, all glory and all beauty! I adore Thee!
