Dubai, Twitter Censors Its First Account

For the first time in its six-year history, Twitter has censored a user account. What might be a grim milestone for free-speech advocates is more palatable when you consider the details: The banned account belongs to a German neo-Nazi outfit, and it will only be blocked in Germany, where local laws ban such groups. Twitter's general counsel tweeted the news, naturally, saying: "Never want to withhold content; good to have tools to do it narrowly & transparently." His tweet included a copy of the request from German police. Twitter announced its ability to censor tweets on a country-by-country basis in January, pointing to pro-Nazi content in Germany and France as one possible example of what might be restricted. Reaction to Twitter's decision was mixed, with some wondering how far the company would go to appease local governments. The banned group, meanwhile, was none too pleased. Still visible to most of the world, the account tweeted in part, "Look at this regime: They gossip viciously about china and russia but noone about them!" Which suggests the group could have been banned for bad syntax, too.

hateful people are often the dumbest.
-
You know what, I think I agree with you. Yeah, they shouldn't cater to certain countries. Let the guy get imprisoned, don't silence him.
-
fuck this shit.... first of all i hate Nazism, but we can't block small-effect groups like neo-nazis and permit muslims sharing hate all over the internet and when an unknown childish film is made on their serial killer prophet..they burn our embassies and kill innocent people..are we so dumb?!!!
-
I'm sure the British thought it was hate speech when we kept screaming for them to get out of our country and stop taxting us to death lol? you're just cleaning everything is based on your personal opinion shut the f*** up! it's all of it or nothing at all
-
Hate speech including threats of physical violence or death, is not covered under the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States pertaining to free speech. And mocking me will get you nowhere.
-
Oh it is? Alright then, you're under arrest for expressing your opinon, as it is freedom of speech and hence forth no longer available to only -you-. Having any second thoughts about that remark of yours yet?
-
Banning an anti-jewish tweet, eh? well I don't think it would be the same if it was an anti-Islam. Freedom of speech is bullshit anyway.
-
fair call, but it is always sad to see censorship in my opinion
-
Good! Twitter must start suspending Neo-Nazi and other violently racist and anti Jewish accounts; cowards who can't take what they dish out.

That's a valid point.
-
Oh yeah because the German neo Nazi group posting in English and having poor grammar is TOTALLY a big deal.
-
a ban on free speech im likeing twitter more and more no sarcasem america has to much freedom and so when that freedom is taken or limited we get a bunch of winy little btiches who think freedom is something u deserve well no one deserves it to this 16 year old american it should be earned and it should be abel to be taken away
-
It is bette to censor this then to have to get rid of the whole of twitter in Germany, the law sucks but its their democractic choice.
-
yes but this sets a precedent. should twitter also appease totalitarian governments (ie. China, Burma etc.). i personally think that these issues should be dealt with in context but i don't don't agree with any suppression of free speech, NO MATTER WHAT.
-
Understand, the only place it was banned was in Germany because the local laws there ban such conduct.
-
I don't know... Who doesn't hate Nazis? But I believe a ban on any form of free speech is concerning, even if it is about death and hatred. You only give individuals more.. how should I say..? "Fire", through suppression.
