Lakes are still all frozen - that's how cold this Fort McMurray is. It must a challenge to scoop water form lakes with ice on them. What was the heat source to start a fire of this magnitude? Global warming, eh?

The Martin Mars is an inflexible aircraft. That's why no one wants to hire it.
When it's fully loaded with water, it climbs very slowly. So if you're working in steep terrain it has to circle a lot to gain altitude. The smaller planes mentioned climb faster and can delivery water cheaper in steep terrain.
And that 3 mile run requires a long lake! If there are no long lakes near by, the Mars has to fly farther than the smaller planes. This is also why helicopters are used.
Lastly, a lot of the other fire-fighting planes are amphibious -- they can land at airports to refuel, while the Mars requires fueling at a lake, which has to be specially arranged.
In cases where the Mars has a big enough lake near by, and no mountains in the way, it's awesome. Otherwise, it's very expensive to operate.
